How to Care for Your Leather Shoes and Boots Before Winter
A beautiful pair of shoes or boots can last for years, but Toronto winters ask a lot of them. Rain, slush and sidewalk salt can leave their mark. A little care before the season begins—and a few good habits during it—make a real difference.

Smooth leather: clean, condition and protect
Brush away loose dirt, then clean the leather with a product intended for smooth leather. Once the shoes are completely dry, apply a suitable leather cream or conditioner. Finish with a protector recommended for that finish, following the product directions.
Pay particular attention to the seams and the area where the upper meets the sole. During winter, wipe away salt and slush promptly so they do not sit on the leather.
Suede and nubuck: keep the soft texture
Use a suede or nubuck brush to lift dirt gently. Choose cleaning and protective products specifically labelled for these materials, and test any new product on a small, less visible area first.
Regular smooth-leather cream can change the look and feel of suede or nubuck. When in doubt, ask before applying anything—especially to a favourite pair.
Rustic, oiled and waxed leather: check the finish
These leathers are loved for their character, but their care varies from one finish to another. A cream or oil may deepen the colour or change the texture. Even different Blundstone styles can call for different care.
Read the care instructions for your specific pair and test the recommended product in a discreet spot before treating the whole boot.
After a wet or snowy day
Wipe off surface dirt and salt as soon as you can. If your shoes are wet, remove the footbeds if they are designed to come out, and let everything dry naturally at room temperature. Keep footwear away from radiators, heaters and hair dryers; direct heat can damage the materials.
Before wearing the pair again, make sure it is dry. Then check whether the leather needs cleaning, conditioning or renewed protection.
