Heel Pain When You Walk: What to Look for in a Shoe

Heel pain can change the way you walk. You may notice it with your first steps in the morning, after a long day on your feet, or when you get up after sitting. Plantar fasciitis is one common cause of pain underneath the heel, but it is not the only one. We can help you explore footwear; a doctor or other healthcare professional can assess what is causing the pain. AAOS

Why we talk about arch support

The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, from the heel toward the toes, and helps support the arch. At Foot Sensation, we sometimes describe it with a rubber band: as you put weight on your foot, the arch moves and the tissue beneath it comes under tension. If that area is already sore, repeatedly loading it can be uncomfortable. A shoe with support that meets your arch comfortably may help reduce strain as you walk. MyHealth Alberta

This is why we don’t choose a shoe by softness alone. Cushioning can help absorb impact, particularly beneath a tender heel. But a shoe also needs to feel stable and supportive under your foot. When you try one on, walk around and notice whether your arch feels supported, your heel stays comfortably in place, and your foot feels secure rather than sinking into the sole. nhs.uk

Where a rocker sole may help

A rocker sole has a curved shape that helps the shoe roll forward as you take a step. For some people with plantar heel pain, a supportive rocker shoe is worth trying to see whether the walking motion feels more comfortable. It can also be helpful when pain is farther forward, under the ball of the foot, because the sole can reduce how much the forefoot has to bend during a step. The shape and fit matter, so we encourage you to walk in the shoes before deciding. orthopt.org

Pain in the ball of the foot is different

Pain beneath the ball of the foot is often called metatarsalgia. It describes where the pain is; it does not tell you what is causing it. If the front of your foot is sore, check that your shoes have enough width and depth so they do not squeeze your toes or press across the forefoot. A stable shoe with an appropriate rocker sole may feel better than one that bends sharply under the painful area. chelwest.nhs.uk

Your shoes at home matter, too

If you change from supportive shoes to bare feet or thin slippers as soon as you get home, your feet may lose the support you relied on all day. We often suggest trying a supportive indoor sandal or shoe, particularly on hard floors. Depending on the person and the fit, that may be a Finn Comfort or Birkenstock style. What matters is that the footbed feels right for your arch and that you can walk comfortably in it. Right Decisions

Footwear is only part of the picture. Gentle, regular stretching of the calf and the sole of the foot is commonly recommended for plantar heel pain; calf stretching may also be useful for some people with forefoot pain. Follow the exercises recommended by your healthcare professional, especially if a stretch makes your symptoms worse. nhs.uk

If the pain is unbearable, stops you from walking, gets worse, or keeps returning, please consult your doctor. Footwear can help with comfort and support, but it cannot replace an assessment of persistent or severe pain. nhs.uk

At Foot Sensation, we’ll measure your feet, listen to where you feel discomfort, and help you compare supportive shoes and indoor footwear at our Bloor or Danforth store. Bring the shoes you wear most often—and any insoles you use—so we can see what feels different when you walk.
